The sinking of an Iranian ship by the US near Sri Lanka brings the conflict uncomfortably close to India.
Legal experts have concluded that a recent U.S. submarine attack on the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean did not violate international or American military law. The attack, which occurred near Sri Lanka and resulted in 87 deaths and 32 rescues, targeted a legitimate military vessel, according to multiple legal scholars, despite the ship's non-aggressive status at the time and its participation in naval exercises hosted by India.
Following the U.S. sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka’s coast, the Sri Lankan Navy took custody of another Iranian vessel, the IRIS Bushehr, which had requested assistance due to engine failure. Over 200 sailors from the Bushehr were brought ashore for medical checks and border procedures, while 15 remained onboard with Sri Lankan assistance. The Bushehr had been participating in naval exercises before the incident.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that a U.S. submarine sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in international waters off Sri Lanka's coast. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 87 Iranian sailors and has intensified tensions in the region.
