China has intensified its criticism of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña's recent visit to Taiwan, accusing him and his colleagues of acting as 'pawns to separatist forces' and having 'ulterior motives' for maintaining ties with Taipei.
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña arrived in Taiwan for his first official visit, reaffirming Paraguay's diplomatic recognition of Taiwan despite growing pressure from China. Paraguay remains the only South American nation to maintain formal diplomatic ties with the self-ruled island.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China firmly opposes and condemns Paraguayan President Santiago Peña's visit to Taiwan, urging the Paraguayan government to recognize the one-China principle.
China accused Paraguayan leaders of acting as 'pawns of Taiwan's separatist forces' and ignoring 'the will of the people' following President Santiago Peña's recent visit to the island.
