Myanmar's military-led government reduced the prison sentences of ousted leader Aung San Suu K ... in a clemency connected to a religious holiday. Former President Win Myint also had his sentence reduced as part of the clemency granted to more than 7,000 prisoners. However, Suu Kyi, 78, still must serve a total of 27 years out of the 33 she was originally imprisoned for.
Myanmar's military junta announced that former leader Aung San Suu K ... has been transferred from prison to house arrest. The former president of her ousted government, Win Myint, was also among elderly and infirmed prisoners moved out of prison because of a severe heat wave. The junta also granted amnesty for over 3,000 prisoners, including 28 foreigners, to mark this week's traditional New Year holiday.
The Myanmar government, led by President Min Aung Hlaing, has reduced the prison sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi as part of a general amnesty benefiting 4,335 prisoners. Suu Kyi's sentence, originally 27 years, is now reduced by one-sixth, leaving her with 22.5 years. It remains unclear if she will serve the remainder under house arrest.
Myanmar's newly elected President Min Aung Hlaing granted amnesty to over 4,500 prisoners to mark the traditional new year. The identities of those released were not immediately available, and there was no sign that former leader Aung San Suu Kyi would be freed or if the pardon would include political detainees.
