The Senate rule-keeper struck down the use of taxpayer funds to bolster security for the proposed $400m project.
A Republican plan to earmark federal funding for President Donald Trump’s planned ballroom hit a temporary roadblock in the U.S. Senate after the Senate parliamentarian concluded that the spending didn’t comply with Senate budget rules.
A proposal to fund $1 billion in security additions for the White House campus and the president’s new ballroom fails to meet procedural rules, according to the Senate parliamentarian, dealing a blow to Republican plans to include it as part of a bill to fund immigration enforcement agencies for the next three years.
The Senate parliamentarian determined that a proposal to fund $1 billion for White House security cannot be included in a Republican spending bill as currently written, dealing a blow to the administration's plans for the East Wing renovation and ballroom.
