A South Korean vessel, HMM Namu, damaged by fire in the Strait of Hormuz, has arrived at a Dubai port for investigation. The explosion occurred on May 4, with the crew extinguishing the fire four hours later. A South Korean government team is investigating the cause, amid conflicting claims about whether it was an Iranian attack or an internal malfunction.
Seoul's investigation into the May 4 explosion on the South Korean-operated vessel HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz concluded that it was caused by an "external impact" from two unidentified airborne objects. The ministry noted limitations in determining the exact type and size of the objects and will analyze the remains, including engine components, in more detail.
South Korea briefed the Iranian ambassador on the findings of a probe into the recent fire and explosion aboard a South Korean-operated vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. A seven-member investigation team concluded that two separate projectiles hit the HMM Namu vessel on May 4, causing the explosion and fire. The vessel was carrying 24 crew members, all of whom were confirmed safe.
A Korean government team continued its investigation into the cause of a fire aboard a cargo ship operated by the Korean shipping firm HMM while it was stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. The HMM Namu, a Panama-flagged cargo ship operated by HMM, arrived at Drydocks World Dubai, the Middle East's largest ship repair yard, early Friday and has since been undergoing an inspection by a government investigation team.
Iran’s embassy in Seoul on 7 May denied reports linking Tehran’s armed forces to an incident involving the South Korean-operated vessel HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz. In an official statement, the embassy said it "firmly rejects and categorically denies any allegations" of Iranian involvement. The statement added, however, that failing to account for operational conditions and security realities in a region affected by heightened military tensions could result in unintended incidents.
