Prime Minister Bart De Wever said the move would see "less dependence on fossil fuel imports and more control over our own supply".
The Belgian State, ENGIE S.A., and Electrabel NV/SA have signed a Letter of Intent setting out the framework for exclusive negotiations regarding the potential acquisition by the Belgian State of ENGIE's and Electrabel's nuclear activities, encompassing the full scope of the nuclear fleet of seven reactors and associated assets and liabilities.
The Belgian government has begun talks to take direct ownership of the country's seven nuclear power reactors, with all decommissioning and dismantling works suspended to ensure that all options remain available to the Belgian State.
Belgium's government is negotiating with French energy giant Engie to acquire all seven nuclear reactors, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and gain greater control over its energy supplies.
Belgium is reversing its decades-long phasing-out course, seeking more energy independence by reviving its nuclear plants, with the government signing a Letter of Intent to acquire Electrabel’s entire nuclear operations in the country.
The Belgian Government and the French energy group Engie are negotiating a possible state takeover of all seven nuclear reactors at Doel and Tihange, reflecting the Federal Government's ambition to extend the lifespan of existing reactors and potentially develop new nuclear capacity in Belgium.
