Major U.S. cruise operators are diverting ships from parts of Mexico after a wave of violence triggered by the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho,' in a military raid.
The Norwegian Bliss, the massive cruise ship that calls Seattle home every summer for Alaska cruises, has canceled its stop in Puerto Vallarta this week after a wave of cartel violence tore through the Mexican state of Jalisco.
As security developments in Mexico continue to draw international attention, precautionary steps have been introduced by Carnival Cruise Line for itineraries departing from the United States and calling at Cozumel.
Carnival Cruise Line is cancelling shore tours to mainland Mexico for ships visiting Cozumel. The port stops in Cozumel are not cancelled, only select shore tours, which will be refunded.
Just one cruise ship was scheduled to make a stop in the popular Mexican resort town of Puerto Vallarta tomorrow. But that planned visit by Holland America has been canceled due to the unrest the region is currently facing.
