Police said a 19-year-old suspect linked to a shooting outside the US consulate in Toronto in March is still at large and is considered "armed and dangerous".
A Toronto police officer, Marc Pinizotto, 43, was shot and killed during an investigation related to a March gunfire attack on the U.S. Consulate in Toronto. Pinizotto, a veteran of 18 years, died in hospital from wounds sustained when a suspect opened fire during a Thursday morning operation. One suspect, Nicholas Bennett, 19, was critically injured in the incident and will be charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect, Zara Jabbi, also 19, remains at large and is wanted in connection with the consulate shooting. The consulate was previously struck by gunfire in a March incident that caused damage but no injuries, amid heightened tensions from the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran and related attacks on Toronto synagogues. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw confirmed the shooting occurred during the execution of search warrants connected to several investigations. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit stated that the suspect fired first. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed condolences, noting her long acquaintance with the officer’s family.
A Toronto police officer has been shot as police raided an apartment allegedly linked to the March attack on the US consulate. Toronto police confirmed an officer was shot before 6am (1000 GMT) while conducting a search warrant in the north-west of the city, and has been rushed to hospital. The Globe and Mail, citing an anonymous source, said the search warrant was part of a national security investigation related to the shooting at the US consulate in downtown Toronto on 10 March. Toronto police confirmed at the time that two men fired multiple rounds at the empty US diplomatic building before sunrise. No one was hurt in the incident that Pete Hoekstra, the US ambassador to Canada, called “deeply troubling”. Canada’s federal police have said the investigation into the consulate shooting would determine whether it amounted to a “terrorist” event.
A Toronto police officer was shot Thursday during an early morning raid on a high-rise building connected to a national security investigation, according to authorities. "Officers are conducting a search warrant in the area," police said in a post on US social media platform X at around 7 am (1100GMT), adding that "there was an exchange of gunfire. Officer was shot. Officer transported to hospital via emergency run." A follow-up post confirmed that Toronto Police Chief Demkiw and Toronto Police Association President Campbell had gone to the hospital, with authorities promising an update "as soon as possible." The officer's condition was not immediately known. The operation took place around 5.42 am at Tretheway Drive and Black Creek Drive in the northwest end of the city, involving tactical officers from Toronto Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Globe and Mail newspaper, citing a source with knowledge of the probe, said the raid was related to a national security investigation into the March 10 shooting at the US Consulate in Toronto, in which two unidentified gunmen fired at the exterior of the building before fleeing. A white Honda CRV stopped in front of the diplomatic mission in Toronto, where two individuals exited the vehicle, discharged "multiple" shots from an apparent handgun before getting back in the car and driving away around 4.30 am local time, according to witnesses. Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the shooting at the consulate as a “reprehensible act of violence and attempt at intimidation.”
