Myanmar's military-backed government has reduced the prison term of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi as part of a wider amnesty linked to the Buddhist religious holiday of Kason. This is the second mass amnesty in two weeks, following a similar action on April 17 that released more than 4,500 prisoners. In the most recent amnesty, 1,519 prisoners, including 11 foreigners, received clemency, and the sentences of many others, including Suu Kyi, were cut by one-sixth.
Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing has cut all prisoners’ sentences by one-sixth, a blanket measure that grants deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence a further reduction, according to a member of her legal team. Thursday’s measure comes to mark a public holiday, according to a statement published by the presidential office. Amnesties typically happen as Myanmar marks Independence Day in January and its New Year in April.
Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been given a further one-sixth reduction in her sentence as part of an amnesty, a member of her legal team said on Thursday, the second such commutation in two weeks. The Nobel laureate, who has been held since being toppled by the military in a 2021 coup, will now have just over 18 years left to serve, the legal team member said, declining to be identified by name.
