Guyana has asked the International Court of Justice to rule that Venezuela does not have a legitimate claim on the potentially oil-rich Esequibo region, which has been the subject of a dispute between the two countries since colonial times.
Guyana has argued at the International Court of Justice that 70% of its territory is at stake in a historic border dispute with Venezuela over a swath of jungle that is rich in resources.
Guyana and Venezuela have returned to the International Court of Justice to continue legal proceedings over a longstanding territorial dispute concerning the resource-rich Essequibo region, which makes up about 70% of Guyana's land.
Guyana has asked judges at the International Court of Justice to rule that Venezuela does not have a legitimate claim on the potentially oil-rich region around the Esequibo river, which has been the subject of a dispute between the Latin American neighbours since colonial days.
Guyana urged the ICJ on May 3 in The Hague to affirm the 1899 arbitration boundary, rejecting Venezuela’s claim over the oil-rich Esequibo which Guyana says threatens its sovereignty and development.
