Ali Larijani, a key Iranian security official and prominent conservative figure, was confirmed killed in an Israeli airstrike, according to Iranian authorities. Aged 67, Larijani had reportedly taken a leading role in running Iran following the recent deaths of its supreme leader in U.S. and Israeli strikes that triggered a broader regional conflict.
Following a surge in hostilities involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, Israeli military officials confirmed the deaths of two top Iranian figures: Ali Larijani, a senior security official, and Gen. Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Basij force. Larijani, a prominent conservative with deep ties in Iran’s theocratic elite, was believed to have assumed a leading role in governance after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top figures were killed in earlier strikes.
Iran has confirmed that its security chief Ali Larijani has been killed, according to state Iranian media. Larijani was one of Iran's most influential leaders and had held the position of top security chief since August the previous year. He was previously very close to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was himself killed on the first day of the war.
On March 17, 2026, Israel killed Ali Lariyaní, secretary of Iran's National Security Council and a key figure in the regime, marking his death as the most significant since the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28. Tehran confirmed the death hours later, emphasizing that the regime does not depend on a single figure. Lariyaní, considered a de facto authority, was assassinated amid heavy Israeli bombings along with Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij paramilitary force.
