Polish officials have welcomed U.S. assurances that a recent decision to delay the deployment of 4,000 American troops to Poland is only temporary. The troops, originally from the Army's 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, were expected as part of the U.S.'s rotational military presence in Poland, a NATO ally bordering Ukraine.
The Pentagon has canceled deployments of thousands of U.S. troops to Poland and Germany, part of President Donald Trump's order to reduce the American military presence in Europe by about 5,000 personnel. The shift affects the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team from Fort Hood, Texas, and a rocket battalion set for Germany.
Poland’s defence minister said no decisions have been made to reduce the number of American troops in the country and recent U.S. moves may only temporarily delay their deployment, after meeting U.S. Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Christopher Mahoney.
The U.S. has delayed—but not canceled—a planned deployment of around 4,000 troops to Poland, officials say. Polish and U.S. authorities emphasize this is a temporary logistical shift, not a reduction in commitment.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday that the Pentagon's planned deployment of more than 4,000 U.S.-based troops to Poland was delayed rather than canceled. The Trump administration had not yet reached a final decision on where the troops would ultimately be sent.
